The Blue Economy starts with 'People' and 'Place'
Tanzania’s rivers, inland lakes, and ocean support over 6 million people through fishing, fish trading, aquaculture, and tourism. Yet inland fish catches have fallen by 30% over four decades, river fish are disappearing, and coastal catches have halved since 1984. Blue Economy Organisation (BEO) works with fishing and coastal communities to combine local knowledge with evidence-informed action that restores aquatic ecosystems and strengthens livelihoods.
Ecosystems recovery
Blue Economy Organisation works with communities to protect and restore rivers, lakes, wetlands and coastal waters. These ecosystems provide food, create jobs, support fish populations and protect communities from floods, erosion and other environmental threats.
Sustainable livelihoods
Fish and other aquatic products can bring greater returns. BEO works with communities to reduce post-harvest losses, improve product quality, explore local processing, and connect producers with reliable markets, helping families earn more while protecting the aquatic ecosystems their livelihoods depend on.
