Cutting edge seaweed farming practices
Seaweed farming presents a sustainable and high-potential avenue for enhancing livelihoods in Tanzania’s coastal communities especially in the mainland (Kilwa, Lindi, Mafia, Mtwara, Bagamoyo, Tanga and Zanzibar.) By introducing and scaling seaweed farming as a primary income source, this initiative will focus on equipping local populations, especially women and youth, with skills in farming, harvesting, and processing seaweed. With low input costs and minimal environmental impact, seaweed farming provides a reliable livelihood option while promoting marine ecosystem health. Training programs will include methods for producing value-added products such as seaweed fertilizers, cosmetics, and food items, thereby increasing income opportunities. The initiative will also foster market linkages, ensuring that communities can sustainably grow and sell their products both locally and internationally. This holistic approach will empower coastal communities, create jobs, and contribute to long-term economic resilience within the blue economy framework.

Data driven fisheries
Our project aims to collect fisheries data, particularly fish catch data through a mobile application database to improve the sustainability of fisheries and ensure communities benefit from the resources. Currently, data collection is hindered by inadequate infrastructure and inconsistent data collectors, resulting in inaccurate and incomplete data. However, collecting fisheries data is crucial for informed decision-making by the government, reporting to international organizations, and establishing relationships with stakeholders. If not conducted, it may lead to gaps in data and unreliable fisheries information. To address this, Blue Economy Organisation is underway to launch the application, empower data collectors through community meetups, and collaborate with fisheries institutes and experts. This initiative offers opportunities for BEO to achieve its objectives, grow, and contribute to the community’s awareness and sustainability of fisheries resources, while providing the government with a reliable source of fisheries data.
