"Better fisheries begin with how we manage them"

Healthy fisheries, shared responsibility

Fisheries support food security, employment and local economies, but their future depends on how fish stocks and fishing activities are managed. BEO works with fishing communities, fisheries institutions and other stakeholders to strengthen responsible fishing practices and improve how decisions are made. By bringing local experience into fisheries management, we aim to support decisions that recognise ecological limits while accounting for the realities of people whose livelihoods depend on fishing.

From landing sites to stronger livelihoods

The value of fisheries extends beyond the catch. Handling, storage, transport, processing and access to markets all influence how much fishing households earn and how much fish reaches consumers. BEO works with communities and relevant partners to identify practical opportunities to reduce post-harvest losses, improve fish quality and strengthen market connections. Better coordination across the fisheries value chain can help increase the value of each catch without making increased extraction the basis for higher incomes.

A future worth sustaining

Sustainable fisheries require cooperation among fishers, local leaders, public institutions, traders and other resource users. BEO supports collaborative approaches that encourage compliance with fisheries rules, strengthen local participation and connect responsible resource management with livelihood priorities. Progress means more than improving today’s catch or income. It means building fisheries systems that can continue providing food, employment and economic value while allowing fish populations and aquatic ecosystems to regenerate.
